How to write a letter to the editor

By Freeman Staff

-All letters must be signed, have an address, and phone number. We need to be able to confirm that the right person wrote the letters.

-We only accept letters ‘to the editor.’ We do not accept letters written to a third person, like, ‘An open letter to the mayor.’

-Needless to say, we want letter writers to feel free to discuss politics and policies. That will sometimes mean criticism. We just ask that there not be any gratuitous name-calling or innuendo in the letters. We reserve the right to edit those references out.

-We need to have the letters be no longer than 300 words – although they can be much shorter. By limiting the length, we allow more opinions to be presented in the space provided. If you believe you have a topic that simply cannot be adequately addressed in that space, please call Freeman Editor Bill Yorth at 1-262-513-2671 to discuss making the letter into a somewhat longer guest editorial.

-If at all possible, we prefer the letters be sent to us by e-mail. That saves us the time of retyping them, which means the letters are dealt with in their original form and in a much quicker manner.

-We reserve the right to edit the letters if we believe that is necessary. But we do not respond to them or add information to them.

Again, we are extremely pleased when you decide to use our editorial page as a means of sharing your thoughts and we believe it is one of the most vibrant parts of our newspaper.
