Muskego sending girls volleyball, boys soccer teams to state tourneys

WAUKESHA - It's a big week for Muskego High School.

The school will send its girls volleyball team to the state meet at the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon and its boys soccer team to the state meet at the Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.

And the school's football team, coached by Ken Krause, won the sportsmanship award in the Southeast Conference in a unanimous vote for the league coaches.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

The volleyball team, coached by Karen Anderson, takes a 39-5 record into the Division 1 quarterfinals Thursday, in which the Warriors are matched up against Manitowoc Lincoln (38-4) at 7:30 p.m.

The winner will play in the 7 p.m. semifinals Friday against the winner of Thursday's Milwaukee Pius (40-5)-D.C. Everest (33-6) winner.

In 4:30 p.m. quarterfinal matches, West Bend East plays Watertown and Middleton plays Kenosha Tremper. Watertown beat West Bend East 25-20, 25-20, 25-21 in last year's championship match. This is Watertown's fourth straight appearance in the state tournament.

Muskego is making its eighth appearance at state and finished second in 2006. Manitowoc Linolcn has qualified for state just once, in 1998.

BOYS SOCCER

The Muskego soccer team (24-3), coached by Eric Hess, plays a Divison 2 quarterfinal match 5 p.m. Thursday aginst Madison West (18-3-2).

The winner plays at 7 p.m. Friday against the winner of Thursday's Green Bay Preble (18-5-3) vs. Milton (14-10) game.

Other quarterfinal games Thursday pit 2007 runner-up Marquette (19-2-1) against defending champion Neenah (16-3-3)â at noon and Hometead (17-4-3) against Eau Claire Memorial (19-4-2) at 2 p.m.

Muskego nipped Kettle Moraine 1-0 in a sectional final to reach the state tournament for the fifth time. It is the Warriors' first appearance at state since finishing second in 2005.

FOOTBALL

After two rounds of the WIAA state playoffs, Waukesha County is left with only two teams.

One, Arrowhead, was expected to be in the quarterfinals. The other, Hamilton, is a surprise.

Undefeated Arrowhead, the defending Division 1 champion, is home at 4 p.m. Saturday against Hartford.

Hamilton, which has pulled two upsets in Division 2, takes on undefeated and top-seeded Waunakee at 3 p.m. Saturday at Hamilton.

Hamilton beat DeForest 23-13 in a mild first-round upset to set up a rematch with Brookfield Central, which had beaten Hamilton 31-6 during the Greater Metro Conference season.

But Hamilton won Saturday 21-13 to improve its record to 8-3.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Pewaukee girls cross country team finished third in Division 2 at Saturday's state meet in Wisconsin Rapids.

The Pirates finished with 117 points, one point behind second-place Dodgeville/Mineral Point and 12 behind champion Mount Horeb/Barneveld.

Pewaukee had four runners in the top 43 - junior Hannah Frett, 18th; freshman Hailey Henck, 32nd; senior Amy Slesar, 37th; and sophomore Kelsey Lorenz, 43rd.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Sectional competition will be held Saturday with most Waukesha County Division 1 schools competing at the Waukesha South Natatorum.

Waukesha North/Kettle Moraine, Waukesha South/Mukwonago, Waukesha West, Arrowhead, Brookfield Central, Brookfield East, Muskego and Oconoowoc will be at South along with Hartford, Pius, Watertown, Wauwatosa East and the West Allis co-op team.

Swimming begins at 2 p.m. and diving at 6:30 p.m.

The Menomonee Falls/Hamilton co-op team will swim at Cedarburg beginning at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Four of Waukesha County's Division 2 teams - Catholic Memorial, Pewaukee, New Berlin Eisenhower and New Berlin West - will compete at Cudahy beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Brookfield Academy will compete at Plymouth beginning at 2 p.m.

The winners of each event qualify for state next week in Madison, as well as the next 18 (Division 1) and 12 (Division 2) best individuals/relay teams/divers (not including sectional winners) from all sectionals.

The Division 2 state meet will be held Nov. 14 and the Division 1 state meet Nov. 15.
