Lancers advance in state tennis tourney

MADISON - The Brookfield Central High School girls tennis team beat Sheboygan North 7-0 during a Division 1 state quarterfinal match of the WIAA state team tournament at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Friday.

Central, 25-2 overall, advanced to face Marshfield, 19-1, in today's semifinals at 9 a.m.

Senior Brittany Skemp won at No. 1 singles to lead the Lancers.

Senior Rebecca Nelson at No. 2, senior Kayley Carswell at No. 3 and sophomore Jessica Tang at No. 4 each added a singles victory for Central, which claimed seven straight-set victories.

In the other quarterfinal matches Homestead defeated Fond du Lac 7-0, Marshfield ousted Greendale 6-1 and Madison West beat Madison East 5-2.

Field Hockey

BROOKFIELD - Trinity Academy of Pewaukee will play University School of Milwaukee at 3 p.m. today at Brookfield Academy in the state field hockey championship game.

Trinity Academy, in its first year of varsity field hockey, upset Arrowhead 1-0 in the semifinals. Trinity, coached by Elizabeth Mitchell, lost to both Arrowhead and University School during the regular season.

Trinity has 43 students, 22 of whom are girls and 17 of whom play field hockey.

Soccer

BROOKFIELD - Kevin Ferron had two goals and an assist to lead Brookfield Central to a 5-1 victory over New Berlin Eisenhower in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal game Thursday.

Central, 11-4-1 overall, advanced to face Homestead in a regional championship game at Arrowhead at 3 p.m. today.

Matt Merz, Brendan Sheehy and Pat Bruders each added a goal for the Lancers, who outshot Eisenhower 25-3.

Merz also contributed two assists with Charlie Nevermann, Stuart McBain each adding one.

Tyler Nickerson scored the lone goal for Eisenhower.
