Catholic Memorial soccer team nips N.B.
West
WAUKESHA - With regulation time winding down in a scoreless deadlock, Catholic Memorial High School junior forward Karl Kallio made things happen and the Crusaders wound up beating New Berlin West 1-0 in a WIAA Division 2 regional soccer final Saturday. West passed the ball to a defender, but Kallio contested the possession, won the ball and dealt it to freshman forward Aaron Horvat, who beat a defender and went one-on-one against West's goalie to score the lone goal of the game with 50 seconds remaining. "It was a back-and-forth game with two quality teams going at it," Memorial coach John Bisswurm said. "We had some good opportunities and hit one off the crossbar and they hit one off the post. It was a shame one team had to lose." Memorial, which was runner-up in the state tournament last season, improved to 16-3-3. * * * PEWAUKEE - Pewaukee advanced to the WIAA Division 2 sectional level with a 3-0 victory over Delavan-Darien in a WIAA Division 2 regional championship game Saturday. "In the first half we looked a little shaky but we hadn't played in a week and a half but we played really well in the second half," Kettle Moraine coach Greg Prospero said. The Lasers, who made their first state-tournament appearance last season, led 1-0 at halftime. * * * TOWN OF MERTON - Junior defender Mike Skarie scored off an assist from senior defender Kyle Peterson in the 71st minute to give Arrowhead a 2-1 WIAA Division 1 regional final victory over Hamilton on Saturday.
