New program for seniors, disabled CITY OF PEWAUKEE - Care Wisconsin, a nonprofit organization headquartered in Madison, will be hosting an opening ceremony and reception from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at N19-W24075 Riverwood Drive, Suite 300, City of Pewaukee, to launch the start of Family Care, a program that ensures frail seniors and adults with disabilities have timely access to high quality services. Speakers for the event include Karen Timberlake, Wisconsin Secretary of Health Services; Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas; and Karen Musser, CEO of Care Wisconsin. The special guest will be state Sen. Mary Lazich, R-New Berlin. Jim Doyle to call a special session of the Legislature to repeal the state’s minimum markup law. The minimum markup law - which was enacted in 1939 - dictates that certain products must be marked up a certain amount and cannot be sold for a loss. It most notably affects the price of gas in Wisconsin. Due to hard economic times, the legislators said they want to see the law repealed to help consumers combat the rising costs of goods. During regular session at the beginning of the year, the lawmakers introduced a bill to repeal the law, but it stalled in the Legislature. Sesquicentennial plates almost gone MADISON - Replacement sesquicentennial license plates will no longer be available to residents after Aug. 1 due to an exhausted supply of limited edition plate material, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced Monday. The plates, which were originally issued in 1998, can still be renewed after the deadline, but drivers wanting to replace them will have to get another type of plate. Non-personalized sesquicentennial plates ordered before the deadline can be replaced at no cost. Personalized replacements will cost $15. For more information, visit www.wisconsindmv.gov. Curling lessons open at Naga-Waukee Park DELAFIELD - The Waukesha County Parks Department and the Kettle Moraine Curling Club invite residents to come out and learn about the sport of curling on either Aug. 3 or Aug. 24 at Naga-Waukee Park Ice Arena, 2699 Gold Road. Curling consists of two teams of four sliding a granite stone down an ice field toward a bull’s-eye target. The goal is to put your team’s stone as close to the target as possible. People of all ages and athletic abilities are welcome to participate in the three sessions taking place between noon and 4:30 p.m. on the selected dates. The cost is $15 and more information can be obtained by calling 548-7801.
